Merit Ceremony
Term 1 began with the 2019 tour choir and wind ensemble performing on Tuesday February 4 at Government House for the SACE Merit Ceremony in their final performance as a group.
Music Parent Information Evening
The 2020 music captains (Alison Marton and Aidan Damerell) and vice-captains (Cassie Lee and Tom Keough) together with other year 12 music students, became acquainted with our new year 8 music students through a games session before our year 8 parent information evening on February 11. Special thanks to the Music Parents Support Group for providing a barbecue for students and parents. The audience was entertained by performances by Ashlyn von Bertouch (violin), Greg Burton (trombone), and Jack Woolcock (voice).
Ross Irwin Workshops
We were thrilled to secure the services of Ross Irwin from The Cat Empire as an artist in residence to workshop our big bands on Monday 2nd March. Ross pushed all band members to greater effort and engagement with the music. His passion for the genre was evident in all facets of his work, as was his unique ability to connect with every student – even learning their names within each workshop.
Volunteers' Week
Jett Gazley and Cooper James composed and recorded “Front Line” specifically for Volunteers’ Week. This brilliant tribute to volunteers of all kinds was featured on the Department for Education, South Australia's Facebook page (Tuesday May 19) and rapidly gained popularity resulting in Jett and Cooper being interviewed on ABC Radio Adelaide.
Luke Thompson Workshops
On Tuesday 26 May the Jazz Choirs participated in a workshops with The Idea of North's bass vocalist and Generations in Jazz adjudicator, Luke Thompson. Students honed their repertoire in the lead up to the recording sessions in June.
GIJ Recording Sessions
On the Thursday 4th and Friday 5th of June, the Generations in Jazz ensembles had the amazing opportunity to record their competition pieces in professional studio conditions. The three big bands, the small ensembles and choirs had an amazing time and learnt many new tips and tricks including how to stand in front of a camera, how to pause before filming and how to maintain professional composure at all times. Although our performances at Generations in Jazz in Mount Gambier were cancelled earlier this year, our bands and choirs were overjoyed and extremely thankful to have had this experience and be able to create a lasting memory of all our hard work.

2Saxy Webinar
On Sunday 23 August, Amelie Sampson, a year 9 SIM student from Brighton Secondary School was offered an amazing opportunity through Presto Musical Repairs and Yamaha Music Australia to meet and play for 2 powerhouse American Saxophone players, Grace Kelly and Leo Pellegrino.
The YouTube/Zoom workshop began with a 40-minute tutorial from the NYC saxophonists and ended with 3 students (1 from Brisbane, 1 from Perth and Amelie from Adelaide) playing to Grace and Leo for feedback. They gave excellent feedback and it was a valuable experience for the students.
